WELL CONTROL TRAINING General Information Recognizing a need to provide well control training to workers in the vast oilfield industry in South Texas, The University of Houston - Victoria (UHV) established the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in 1982. The program quickly became recognized as one of the premier oilfield training programs in the country. In order to make this highly regarded program available to oilfield workers in other areas, the University of Houston-Victoria has partnered with Petroleum College International (PCI). Petroleum College International conducts all petroleum related courses taught at the UHV Petroleum Training Institute. PCI uses the University of Houston-Victoria's widely recognized well control manual, killsheet, and literature to insure that all participating students have a complete and thorough knowledge of well control principals. Successful course participants can receive certification in accordance with the standards set by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) WellCap program. Additional oilfield training courses are offered on a semi regular basis and custom designed courses are available on request. Our certification courses are not "rubber stamp" courses! The curriculum is comprehensive and, to the uninitiated, may seem exhausting, but all students that exert the proper effort succeed. Students that complete our courses know they have earned their certificate.
An important portion of time for each of our courses is spent on our full size drilling and workover well control simulator. Our simulator represents the state of the art in simulation technology and allows flawless simulation of drilling and workover situations with a realism that was only dreamed of a few years ago. With this equipment, students transfer the concepts and ideas they learn in the classroom into direct "hands-on" practice.
HANDS-ON TRAINING Classroom instruction is backed up and reinforced with the best simulation equipment available. Our Full Sized, Super Portable, and Ultra-light simulation equipment is built and maintained by the CS Simulator Division of TechTran International, the "Grand-daddy" of well control training equipment. Teamwork is emphasized and the training exercises are highly realistic. While there are less expensive methods of training, this is without question the most effective means of improving and maintaining critical skills and competencies. We never "short change" the student! Our simulator exercises are complete and thorough and the equipment always works. Students in our classes will participate in at least three full simulations and additional demonstrations of typical and complex problems.
